The Book of Chances, Sulki & Min (2011)

We had the design studio Sulki & Min give a talk to students about their practice. I found their lecture to be particularly inspiring partly because their work looks deceptively simple but there’s actually a lot going on conceptually behind the it.

One project that stood out to me in particular was The Book of Chances (2011) https://www.sulki-min.com/wp/the-book-of-chances/

Here, Sulki & Min took spreads from dozens of books they designed and put them through a computer programme which in turn allowed them to generate endless layouts from the work they’ve made.

I’m interested in this automated approach to design. The idea that we provide a set of variables which then in turn create a formal outcome. I recently purchased an Arduino board with a set of sensors, I’m interested in exploring how environmental factors (level of light, sound etc.) can be used to create visual outcomes. Working with code is somewhat of a challenge for me (in a good way) so I’m excited to start developing a body of work using it.
